A SEMESTER IMMERSED IN SUSTAINABLE LIVING AND

LEARNING ON THE LAND

The Field Semester provides a transformative, place-based learning community for young people from varied backgrounds and lived experiences where they will gain the inspiration, sensibilities, and skill-sets to help build a world in which society and ecology thrive, equitably and sustainably.

The Field Semester welcomes young people from varied backgrounds and lived experiences to develop their relationship to self and community through an interdisciplinary and experiential semester program. Our radically redesigned school joins interdisciplinary academic rigor with hands-on projects in land stewardship and community development to inspire personal transformation and equip students to become compassionate leaders and skilled followers, knowledgeable activists and impassioned advocates. Graduates of The Field Semester will emerge aware of the social and ecological challenges of the present and, more importantly, capable and motivated to address them, grounded in justice, equity, and love for others.

Having a space where people can feel safe, connected, and be inspired by their surroundings would be so magical. And I can’t wait to see it.
— Blanca Hernandez, YES Nature to Neighborhoods and advisor to the Field Semster

Our Community

Only 40 minutes from downtown Oakland, nestled into the hills on the shore of the Carquinez Strait, Port Costa is at the confluence of urban spaces and the cultural, political, and ecological systems that support them. The town embodies California’s rich and complex history: once the biggest wheat port in the United States, Port Costa today is a one-road hideaway, home to about 200 people. It sits in the midst of a coastal region dotted with oil refineries, yet the town is surrounded by more than 3,000 of acres of open space.
